This video from the Erasmus MC and NIHES Women’s Health Course in 2015 defines women’s health as a whole, distinct from and in collaboration with men’s health. Dr. Joop Laven, MD PhD delivered this lecture to a group of medical doctors, medical students, and public health experts who attended the course from around the world. He discusses natural menopause, early menopause, and other health concerns for women as they age.
Learning objectives also include summarizing GWAS data on menopause, summarizing the relevant findings in the context of genetics, discussing how new findings challenge current concepts of ovarian aging, presenting a new paradigm for ovarian aging.
Age at menopause varies widely between women, age at menopause is not dependent on nutritional status, and menopause shows no decennial and centennial trends. Age at menopause is estimated to attributable for 50% to genetic factors in family and twin studies.
