Nutritional Guidance for Cognitive Decline, Dale Bredesen, MD from the Metagenics Summit 2015

Dale E Bredesen, MD, is the director of the Easton Center for Alzheimer’s Disease Research at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He is also the principal investigator in Alzheimer’s Disease at the center. This video comes from a presentation he made at the 2015 Metagenics Summit.

Dr. Bredesen has taken a novel approach to clinical management of cognitive decline by integrating nutrition and lifestyle medicine into practice. Based on his research and clinical practice, we may be entering the era of treatable Alzheimer’s Disease. He also discusses Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Subjective Cognitive Impairment (SCI), conditions that can be precursors to Alzheimer’s Disease. Indeed, the opportunity exists to improve our cognition regardless of if we have these conditions through improved nutrition practices.

Some of Dr. Bresesen’s strategies for improving our cognition include

  • Improved nutrition with plant-based foods, high quality fats
  • Aerobic and strength exercise five times per week
  • High quality sleep, as close to 8 hours per night as possible
  • Reduce stress with meditation
  • Optimize gut health with pre and probiotics
