Listen and follow along, to Fergus Shanahan, MD, as he presents an overview of the human microbiome at ASPEN 2015

In this video, Dr. Fergus Shanahan presents “An Overview of the Human Microbiome.” Originally delivered at ASPEN in 2015, this presentation provides a glimpse of success stories in the past with microbiome, as well as a glimpse into the future of using probiotics as preventive and treatment-focused therapies.

He chooses to discuss the microbiome as a therapeutic target in the body. He also discusses the use of microbial biomarkers in the body for diagnostic testing. There are very few such biomarkers. He also seeks to mine the microbiome for novel drug discovery and functional food ingredients.

While the microbiome has been studied for many years, it has recently experienced resurgence in research and interest. For more on Dr. Shanahan’s research and an overview of the microbiome, listen to the full podcast below.
