Key points:  Angiotensin‐converting enzyme (ACE) is an enzyme used in blood pressure regulation and cardiovascular health. It has recently been understood that ACE levels are altered by obesity and weight loss. A recent publication investigated the effects of a high fat diet and ACE levels. This study, published in Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA), used the NUGAT (NUtriGenomic Analysis in Twins) study to examine ACE levels.

46 pairs of twins were fed two different diets for six weeks each, first a high carbohydrate and low fat diet, followed by a high fat (HF) diet. ACE were examined and compared after each diet. After the HF diet consumption, ACE levels increased by 15% and gene expression of ACE in adipose tissues was increased. Genetic analysis showed that homozygous carriers had higher increases in ACE as compared to heterozygous.

A high fate diet increased ACE concentrations in non-obese individuals. The study also showed that there is a genetic component to ACE production. Further investigation is needed to understand the relationship between high dietary fat intake and hypertension and CVD.
